Chronic Pain Thoughts: Volume 39

Dear Reader,

I spent almost 10 years dealing with back pain. When it all started, I was sent to a pain clinic, for many years I received injection after injection, with no relief. I was given medications that were being used off label or that made everything worse. I've had more MRI's, CT scans and x-rays than I can count.

I was about done; I was about to just live with the fact that some days I couldn't walk. I had been told by so many doctors that I just was like this and nothing they could do about it.

I wrote a letter to a local pain doctor, with my records and asking for them to try something different. They listened. They actually referred me to another pain clinic who helped me. It took all summer to get everything set and in December 2024 I had disc replacement surgery at L4/L5. Recovery was much easier than I imagined it would be, and I was back to work within 4 weeks.

I am almost 6 Months out and although I still have pain everywhere, my back doesn't hurt!

There hasn't been a time since the surgery that I could barely walk, or my back hurt too much to do anything. In the past, I've missed out on things because of pain, I've canceled because of pain and now I can do almost all the things.

If you feel like you aren't being listened to, find another provider. I know that's easier said than done but keep going until you find someone.

Book: Under the Bridge (Rebecca Godrey) Caution Spoiler Alert

Under the Bridge

Author; Rebecca Godfrey

Purchase at Amazon, Barns & Noble and Nook

Synopsis;

An investigation into the beating death of Reena Virk

Thoughts;

I found this book because of the TV Series. The book was on my list since I watched this, about August of 2024.

I generally like the book better, there is usually more details, in this case however I found the book to be super boring and hard to read. My question is, did the show take liberties in details? The show had parts where the author's brother had died, however that was not in the book at all

You feel for Warren. It feels as though he was charged as the main investigator, which per details it was someone else. The family of Reena didn't get the justice they so truly deserve

Olivia Wilde as Kate

Jake Johnson as Luke

Anna Kendrick as Jill

Ron Livingston as Chris

Ti West as Dave

Jason Sudeikis as Gene Dentler

Story Line;

Luke and Kate are co-workers at a Chicago brewery, where they spend their days drinking and flirting. They're perfect for each other, except that they're both in relationships. Luke is in the midst of marriage talks with his girlfriend of six years, Kate is playing it cool with her music producer boyfriend Chris. But you know what makes the line between "friends" and "more than friends" really blurry? Beer.

Thoughts:

This movie is rather slow moving, it's truly the most “watching someone else's life” movie I've ever watched

It wasn't the best movie I've seen but it was a totally believable one.

The cast is great! The plot was ok.

CAUTION; Spoiler Alert

Kate (Olivia Wilde) and Luke (Jake Johnson) are co-workers at Chicago craft brewery Revolution Brewing, where they spend their days drinking and flirting. Luke handles the back-end machinery that brews beer, while Kate manages the front office to handle customers. They are perfect for each other (they vibe with each other, enjoy each other's company, share food and even finish each other's sentences), except that they are both in relationships: Kate is with Chris (Ron Livingston), and Luke is with Jill (Anna Kendrick). Jill wants to know if Luke is ready to talk about marriage.

Luke is busy brewing beer and Kate handles phone calls (to all the distributors who are also invited to the party) to set up the anniversary party for the brewery. During lunch they agree to go out for drinks after dinner with all their co-workers from the brewery. While all are drinking at the bar, Luke's fiance, Jill, arrives. After the bar, Kate rides her bike over to her socially awkward, but extremely nice boyfriend's apartment where he gives her dinner and a copy of Rabbit, Run. Chris does not drink beer (and doesn't enjoy Kate taking food from his plate and wants her to use the coasters when she drinks beer on his furniture), while Jill does not enjoy staying late at parties and prefers to spend time at home.

At the brewery anniversary party, Chris invites Luke and Jill to join them for a trip to his family's cottage. During the trip Jill and Chris go for a long hike in the woods (where they have a picnic. Jill is super organized, very prepared and very unlike Kate), where they end up kissing. Luke and Kate spend the whole trip drinking (playing blackjack with Luke acting as the dealer, make a disgusting ham sandwich and end up playing with their food) and staying up late alone together. Chris and Jill return and act like nothing has happened. Luke spends time with Jill playing blackjack and drinking, but Chris ignores Kate, making her feel lonely. After Jill falls asleep, Luke offers to make a bonfire for Kate on the beach. Kate invites Luke to go skinny dipping before stripping off her clothes and running into the lake.

After the group returns home, Chris decides he needs to talk to Kate and the two break up. Newly single Kate makes the whole brewery crew go out the next day for drinks. Kate is visibly upset and shaken. Luke tries to talk to her separately, but she refuses and stays in the company of her co-workers. Luke continues to keep a watchful eye on Kate, but eventually leaves for home. Kate refuses a ride home from Luke and is super drunk. Luke returns home and tells Jill that Chris and Kate are broken up. Jill wants to talk to Luke about getting married. Luke says that he is committed but wants to wait to figure out the right time to conduct the ceremony. Kate ultimately ends up sleeping with a co-worker, Dave (Ti West). This makes Luke very angry at both Dave and Kate, and he spends the whole next day angry, snapping at both of them. Luke refuses to have lunch with Kate and wanted to leave at the end of the day without having a beer with Kate. Kate pleads Luke to have a beer with her. Kate and Luke make peace with each other and Luke admits that Kate is a grown woman and can sleep with whoever she wants. Jill decides to go away for a week with some friends from college to Costa Rica. During this trip, Luke and Kate go out for dinner and fall asleep together on the couch. Luke agrees to help Kate clean out her old apartment and move the next day, and at the end of the day Luke falls asleep on the bed. Kate joins him.

During the next morning, Luke invites Kate to dinner, but then cuts his hand. Kate is squeamish about the blood and is completely unhelpful. An impatient driver (Joe Swanberg), blocked by the moving van, yells at them and starts a fight with Luke. After Luke ends up with a fat lip, Kate ends up calling Dave to help finish the move. Dave invites Kate to go out for drinks, and she tells Luke that she wants to go with Dave, rather than going to dinner with him. Luke is annoyed, and an argument ensues.

Returning home, Luke finds Jill has returned home early, crying. She admits to kissing Chris while at the cottage, asking Luke if he is upset. Luke forgives Jill and lets her know that he still loves her and wants to marry her.

The next day at work Kate and Luke awkwardly interact and then eventually end up sitting together at lunch. Mirroring earlier, they each offer each one other food items before they crack a smile, and drink a beer.

Chronic Pain Thoughts; Volume 38

 Dear Reader,

I know it's been a while. I know I haven't kept up. Things went a little crazy for me in December, more on that later.

While scrolling Facebook reels, I came across Claudia Merandi and her videos regarding chronic pain. From there I found The Doctor Patient Forum.

There is a slew of information on Chronic Pain. I felt such a connection to these videos since it's a lot of what I've been through.

I've been saying for some time that part of the Heroin/Illegal Fentanyl Epidemic is from pain patients being cut off, treated like shit and dismissed for no reason. I understand being in the position where you want to go out and try something, anything, to take the pain away.

I highly encourage you to check out the following:

Anna Kendrick as Stephanie Smothers

Allison Janney as Aunt Linda McLanden

Joshua Satine as Miles Smothers

Andrew Rannells as Darren

Alex Newell as Vicky

Taylor Ortega as Agent Irene Walker

Michele Morrone as Dante Versano

Story Line;

Stephanie Smothers and Emily Nelson reunite on the island of Capri, Italy for Emily's extravagant wedding to a rich Italian businessman, which is interrupted by murder and betrayal.

Thoughts:

This wasn't as good as the first one, but it was still pretty good. It's a fun movie and the fashion is literally amazing!

I don't consider myself to be fashion forward but the dress that Anna Kendrick wears during the rehearsal in Italy is to die for!

They make fun of themselves as the women playing her mother wasn't Jean Smart, they point that out in the movie.

The twist in this one was fantastic!

The scenery was beautiful, the plot was fun and the acting was great!

CAUTION; Spoiler Alert

Five years after the events of the first film, Stephanie Smothers is a famous true crime vlogger and amateur detective and has written a book about her friendship with Emily Nelson and her subsequent imprisonment. At a signing event, she is confronted by Emily, who has been released on appeal. She is marrying her old friend Dante Versano, a wealthy Italian man from a family with connections to organized crime. She invites Stephanie to be her maid of honor, goading her into agreement with the promise of increased book sales and the threat of a potential lawsuit.

After arriving in Capri along with Dante and Stephanie's agent Vicky, the two reunite with Emily's ex-husband Sean and son Nicky. Also at the wedding are Emily's mother Margaret and her aunt Linda, as well as Dante's mother Portia, who has a contentious relationship with Emily, accusing her of marrying into the family for money. At a lunch before the wedding, a bitter and intoxicated Sean has a heated confrontation with Dante. Later, Sean is murdered in his hotel room by an unknown assailant.

Stephanie attends Emily's "bachelorette party", where she turns out to be the only guest, and the two reconnect. When Stephanie returns to the hotel, she discovers Sean's death, which the local police write off as an "accident". Suspecting Emily's involvement, Stephanie follows her the next day but is distracted by an American tourist who reveals herself as Irene Walker, an FBI agent investigating Linda, and shows Stephanie a photo of Linda talking to a mysterious woman that Stephanie identifies as Emily from her tattoo. They are interrupted by Dante, who Stephanie later sees in a heated discussion with Matteo Bartolo, a member of the Versanos' rival family.

Emily and Dante are married. At the reception, Dante makes a show of burning the prenuptial agreement between him and Emily, declaring it as a gesture of peace between the Versanos and the Bartolos. Later that evening, Stephanie follows Dante as he leaves the reception, only to witness him being shot to death. Portia accuses Emily of murdering him, while Linda casts suspicion on Matteo, who vehemently denies it. With Emily's presence accounted for, and Stephanie the only witness to the murder, she is placed under house arrest while the death is investigated.

Stephanie meets with Emily, only to realize from her odd behavior that she is in fact Charity, the third of the set of triplets that included Emily and her late sister Faith. Charity stabs herself, framing Stephanie for the attack. Stephanie is freed from her captivity by Isabella, a housekeeper paid by Irene. Isabella lets her into Margaret's room; she reveals that Charity's stillbirth was faked by Linda, a con artist who raised her as her own. Stephanie leaves the hotel and meets Irene, but before she can be taken to a safehouse, Irene is fatally stabbed by Charity in disguise. Meanwhile, Linda discovers from Margaret that Stephanie spoke with her, and smothers her with a pillow. Stephanie is taken to meet with Portia Versano.

Portia injects Stephanie with sodium thiopental, believing that she and Emily conspired to kill Dante. After failing to get any clear answers from her, Portia orders her killed, but she is rescued by Emily. She explains that Linda attempted to blackmail her and Dante, threatening to reveal that their wedding was a marriage of convenience to hide that Dante and Matteo were lovers. After she refused, Emily was confronted by Charity, who killed both Sean and Dante due to her romantic obsession with Emily. Charity drugged her and married Dante in her place, with Emily only being freed after Charity forgot to drug her that day.

Charity, posing as Emily, uses Stephanie's phone to livestream, sending a coded threat to Emily and Stephanie that she will kill Nicky if Stephanie does not turn herself in. Stephanie and Emily confront Charity and Linda, who is holding Nicky at gunpoint. Linda plans to kill Stephanie and pin the murders on her, with Charity assuming Emily's life, money, and position within the Versano family. Stephanie points out that Emily will also have to die, which Charity rejects. In the ensuing commotion, Nicky flies a toy drone into Linda's face, allowing Charity to take her gun and shoot her, sending her over a cliff to her death.

Emily convinces her sister to take her place in prison, while also taking responsibility for all of the murders committed. Stephanie returns home, writing a second book about the murders in Capri and honoring Emily's wish that she gives Nicky a normal life. Emily, who has remained in hiding in Italy, is confronted by Portia. She reveals that she knew the marriage between Emily and Dante was a sham, and that Emily did not commit the murders. In return for welcoming Emily into the Versano family, she requests "a simple favor", handing her an envelope with unknown contents.

This was a fun little movie. Extra points that it wasn't overly long!

I really like Jack Quad, he has this ability to be serious funny.

This had an original plot and the twist in the middle was totally unexpected!

Be warned, there are tons of crazy bloody, injury scenes in this one, so if you're squeamish, don't watch!

CAUTION; Spoiler Alert

Nathan Caine is a mild-mannered introvert with congenital insensitivity to pain with anhidrosis (CIPA) working as an assistant manager at a trust credit union in San Diego. His co-worker Sherry Margrave is romantically interested in him, but Nathan is hesitant due to his condition and inexperience with women. At a bar with Sherry, Nathan meets his middle-school bully, who calls him "Novocaine." Sherry gets revenge for Nathan by tricking the bully into drinking a shot of hot sauce; the two then have sex.

The next morning, on Christmas Eve, a gang of robbers dressed up in Santa suits led by Simon Greenly rob the credit union. Simon murders Nathan's boss Nigel and takes Sherry as a hostage. Nathan impulsively steals a cop car in pursuit of the car in which Sherry is being held, but he follows the wrong car and ends up in a confrontation with another robber, Ben Clark, in a restaurant kitchen. He eventually shoots Ben dead, but not before severely burning his hand while retrieving Ben's gun from a deep fryer.

After noting Ben's tattoo, Nathan asks his only friend, Roscoe Dixon, a gamer whom he has never met in person, to help him find the artist. He successfully tracks down the artist, Zeno, and interrogates him for Ben's address, hoping to find Sherry. After a brawl, Nathan manages to get Ben's last name from Zeno, and he calls a colleague to find Ben's home address using his loan documents. Ben's house is booby-trapped, and Nathan ends up stuck in a snare; in desperation, he calls Roscoe. Ben's brother Andre enters the house and begins to torture Nathan, who feigns feeling pain. Roscoe arrives, and together they overpower and kill Andre. Police officers Mincy Langston and her partner Coltraine Duffy arrive at the house and arrest Roscoe, who has switched clothes with Nathan.

Nathan locates Sherry and Simon at an auto shop and discovers she is Simon's sister and an accomplice to the heist; she originally intended to seduce Nathan to learn the bank vault code but developed real feelings for him (and was horrified that Simon needlessly murdered her boss, Nigel). Simon tries to kill Nathan against Sherry's protests, but he is shot by an arriving Coltraine, while Sherry and Nathan are arrested. Simon in turn shoots Coltraine dead and wounds Mincy, escaping in the ambulance holding Nathan. Sherry frees herself from the handcuffs, and she pursues the ambulance while Roscoe takes a wounded Mincy to the hospital.

After regaining consciousness, Nathan breaks free from the handcuffs and defibrillates Simon, causing him to crash. Having had enough of Nathan, Simon breaks his arm just as Sherry arrives. As soon as he is about to kill Sherry, Nathan injects himself with adrenaline and kills Simon by sticking his exposed arm bone through Simon's jaw before falling unconscious, finally exhausted by his injuries.

When Nathan awakes in a hospital two weeks later, he learns he has been sentenced to six months of house arrest and five years of probation instead of a lengthy prison sentence due to his saving the life of the cop whose car he took to pursue Sherry.

One year later, he visits Sherry, who is near the end of a short sentence for her role in the robbery. They share a cherry pie, the first physical food Nathan ever ate, which Sherry had introduced him to on their first date. As the prison guards lead Sherry back to her cell, Nathan chews and smiles.

Thoughts:

We were super excited to see this, Ke Huy Quan is after all, in one of my favorite movies of all times (As is Sean Austin) The Goonies! I am so glad to see him making a comeback! Now, if only we could get Rick Moranes to do the same!

This movie was fun; it was a little on the slower side as far as the actual plot. It wasn't necessarily the plot, but the why.

The acting and action was great; I especially loved his assistant! She was super fun

It was also an acceptable length and wasn't super long, which is nice as most movies now have a super long run time for no reason

CAUTION; Spoiler Alert

Marvin Gable is a successful real estate agent who has recently been awarded the highest honor by his boss, friend, and mentor Cliff Cussick. He is often accompanied by his cynically depressed assistant Ashley, who constantly threatens leaving her job, despite Marvin's pep talks.

In actuality, Marvin is a former assassin for "The Company", run by his estranged brother Alvin, AKA "Knuckles". He was to eliminate a young lawyer, Rose, after she stole from the Company, but due to his love for her, he told her to run instead before choosing to leave his old life behind.

In the present, around Valentine's Day, Marvin receives a letter from Rose. He is later confronted by knife assassin and poetry obsessed Raven, who has been hired to find the whereabouts of Rose. Marvin knocks Raven out and leaves him in his office. He heads back home to collect his things before two more agents, King and Otis, confront him.

Marvin manages to defeat the two before he is captured by Rose, who takes him back to her hideout at a strip club. Meanwhile, Ashley discovers Raven as well as his poetry and falls in love with him, where he in turn admires her appreciation for his work.

Cliff goes to Marvin's house where he is confronted by Knuckles who tells him of Marvin's former life. Despite this, Cliff respects Marvin's efforts to change and Knuckles kills him when he declares that they are "brothers".

Rose tells Marvin she has collected an insurmountable degree of information of Knuckles' frequent money laundering, revealing that he has been cheating several partners, and has even captured his accountant, Kippy Betts. She had also been coercing Knuckles' right hand man Renny Merlo, who was going to double cross her for fear of Knuckles finding out that he had stolen from him. Rose plans to use Kippy's information to finally take down Knuckles, and wants Marvin to return to his old ways to help her out.

Having hid in one of the houses Marvin is selling, a couple that Marvin previously spoke to arrive, forcing him to finalize his work with them. He contacts Ashley and asks that she bring the papers, unaware that Raven is with her. Kippy manages to escape and contacts Renny, who in turn orders King and Otis to come as well.

As Rose leaves to confront Knuckles, Raven, Ashley, Otis, and King arrive and a fight breaks out, resulting in the death of Marvin's overzealous rival Jeff Zaks. Marvin and Raven team up and take out Otis and King, but Ashley insists that Marvin and Raven cease their fight as she is in love with the latter. Inspired by this, Marvin pursues Rose to Knuckles' hideout and they fight through his men, with Merlo getting killed.

After realizing his brother murdered Cliff, Marvin has one final fight with Knuckles, ending with him victorious. Rose reveals that she contacted the Russian gangsters that Knuckles had cheated, resulting in them coming and taking him away. Marvin finally declares his love for Rose, proudly embracing his past and future.

Story Line;

Whistler, a gay conversion camp, has been in operation by the same family going back generations. Currently the camp is operated by Owen Whistler (Kevin Bacon) and his wife, Dr. Cora Whistler (Carrie Preston). The Whistlers have a small staff of four: activities director Amy, her gay-conversion-camp-alumni-turned-athletics-director boyfriend Zane, groundskeeper Balthazar, and Molly--the camp counselor who uncovers the horrors of Whistler Camp at the bequest of camper Jordan. A fifth employee emerges as a decoy within the campers. Suddenly, employees are picked off in a murder streak by an unknown assailant

Thoughts:

This wasn't bad. It starts with a good murder but stops a bit there.

The horror part comes in the form of torture. Places like this still exist and are so wrong.

It took until almost the end to figure out the who, it came together nicely

The plot was good, the acting and the scenery. It was a fairly decent slasher movie

CAUTION; Spoiler Alert

At night, a mysterious figure kills a person driving to a conversion camp known as Whistler Camp. In the morning, a group of LGBTQ youth arrive at Whistler Camp, run by Owen Whistler. He introduces the camp as an inclusive safe space and promises that they will not try to forcibly convert them. Owen separates the campers into cabins for boys and girls, but Jordan, who is non-binary, is not comfortable going to either. Owen assigns Jordan to the boys' cabin. The group comes together in a circle and shares why they came to Whistler Camp. Jordan says they made a deal with their religious family to attend for a week so they could legally emancipate themself. The next morning, Owen criticizes and outs another member, Alexandra, for not sharing that she is trans. He makes her go to the boys' cabin for dishonesty. Alexandra later convinces the camp's new nurse, Molly, to give her estradiol, an estrogen hormone.

The group partakes in activities overseen by former member and athletics director Zane and his fiancée, activities director Sarah. One night, Owen splits the group into pairs, handcuffing them together, and instructs them to walk into the woods alone. The group is hesitant, but Owen promises that they will regroup in the morning. Jordan and Alexandra see a mysterious person in the woods. The next day, the camp's therapist, Dr. Cora Whistler, belittles members of the group for their sexualities and gender identities, including Jordan. Affected by Dr. Cora's words, Jordan returns to the boy's cabin upset but is cheered up when the group hosts a dance party to "Perfect" by Pink. That night, Jordan sneaks into the main office and discovers photographs that show the history of Whistler Camp, including the torturing of children. Jordan is caught by Molly, who says she did not know and promises to protect the group. The camp's groundskeeper, Balthazar, is killed by the mysterious figure while observing the girls showering through a spy cam.

The next day, the group is divided by gender. Owen takes the boys to a shooting range while the girls make pies for the boys. Jordan defeats Zane in a shooting competition. Owen reverts to calling Jordan "he" instead of "they". Owen instructs Toby, a gay man, to shoot Owen's dog, Duke, because Duke has cancer. If he refuses to do so, Zane will start to torture Duke by breaking the dog's legs. Jordan kills Duke instead and storms off. Jordan, Alexandra, and Toby agree to leave Whistler Camp in the morning. Gabriel seduces Stu and they have sex before Gabriel calls Owen and Zane, revealing he secretly works for Whistler Camp. They punish Stu with aversion therapy, a form of electroshock torture that Owen says will make Stu heterosexual. Upon finding Stu unconscious, Molly quits and says she will go to the police. Owen threatens her to stay. The mysterious figure butchers Zane and Sarah and fatally electrocutes Gabriel.

Every person at Whistler Camp comes together after finding the dead bodies. The murderer kills Cora. Alexandra leads the younger members out of the camp. The murderer reveals herself to be Molly. Her real name is Angie Phelps. She murdered the real Molly to take her place as the camp nurse. Angie attended Whistler Camp and was tortured there by Owen. She made it her mission to close every conversion camp in existence by killing the complicit employees. Angie attacks Owen but is unable to gain the upper hand. Jordan takes Owen's gun but does not shoot, giving Angie the opportunity to kill Owen herself. Angie tries talking Jordan into helping her, but Jordan refuses. The police arrest Angie. The group agrees to live their lives to the fullest.
